HFEA: Waiting Times

This post is in progress…

“OID – Open ID” Cohort

The “Open ID” cohort of DCP, who began to turn 18 in October 2023, are able to apply to the HFEA for identifying information.

These DCP are given the legal name, date of birth and last known address (likely to be from 18 years ago as the HFEA have done very little to keep contact details up to date).

The donor has no legal obligation to interact or respond to the DCP who reaches out.

“OTR – Open the Register” Cohort

Some of our OTR Cohort (conceived between 1st August 1991 – 31st March 2005) waited up to 18 months for the HFEA to confirm how many siblings they have.

Some have been given incorrect information by the HFEA about the number of siblings they have because the number of live births collated by the HFEA depends on the recipient parents reporting back to their clinic that their last cycle of treatment resulted in a successful pregnancy.

Finding out if you are genetically related to your partner

If you and your partner were conceived after 1st August 1991, you can apply to the government regulator to find out whether you are related to your partner. “If you’re over sixteen and are thinking about starting a physical relationship with someone, you can make a joint application to us to find out if you’re genetically related.” For more information, please see: Donor-conceived people applying to find out if they are genetically related to their partner. The waiting time for this information is roughly 9 months.

Complaining to the HFEA

If you have been made to wait an unreasonable amount of time for information from the HFEA or the information you have been given is incorrect, you can make a complaint to the HFEA at the following link:
