Sperm Donations/Donor Conception was very limited historically
In fact, it was happening a LOT more than people thought or want to believe. Donor Conception is a practise that been taking place in the UK since the 1940’s and has nearly always been shrouded in secrecy.
A lot of people still don’t believe it was happening pre-1991, whereas the rising age of consumer DNA testing has proven that this is certainly not the case.
Nearly all Recipient Parents were told that the sperm donors were medical students, especially if you were conceived pre-2000
Many of us were told that our parents sperm donors/our biological fathers were medical students however that has turned out not to always be the case.
Recipient Parent will always tell their children they are donor conceived.
From a Donor Conceived Person’s point of view, it is assumed that legal changes over the last couple of decades means that we have a ” legal right to know” or that we will somehow automatically be told that we were donor conceived. Sadly, there is currently no obligation for a Raising Parent to volunteer the info in the first place and often hope to take their secrets with them to the grave.
There is a 10-Family Rule in place.
If you’ve followed the proper channels through licensed fertility clinics, you should be aware that the 10-family rule only applies to the U.K.
Globally, there is a unenforced 75-family rule, meaning that donor’s sperm is being exported from the U.K.
The general rule for sperm donors here in the U.K is that 50% are British, 25% are Danish and 25% are American.
Interestingly, sperm donations that are imported into the U.K are estimated at 25% coming from in Denmark and 25% from America.
Donor Conceived People have no need to know the Donor’s details
From a Donor Conceived Person’s standpoint, it is believed that because we are raised by one Recipient Parent, that we have no need to know our parents donor’s details and all-important medical history.
It is presumed that the Recipient Parent will somehow expand to fill the knowledge and genetic gap for us, which is most often not the case. Unlike adoptees who everyone expects to have some level of curiosity about their origins, Donor Conceived People are actively discouraged to ask questions and seek out their truth.
It seems to be treated as almost disrespectful to our Raising Parents (and sometimes to the donor/donor families) for Donor Conceived People to want to know about the unknown, when actually its perfectly natural and normal.
Donor Conceived People are only after money or automatically want to hold a claim to their donors’ estate
Absolutely NOT the case. 99.99999% of Donor Conceived People simply need answers about their origins and medical history.
Donor Conceived People have no legal rights to claim anything from their donor.
