OID – “Open ID” cohort

OID – “Open ID” Cohort

If you were conceived after 31st March 2005, you are part of the ‘Open ID’ (OID) cohort which is the name given to the group of donor conceived people eligible to apply to the HFEA for identifying information about your parents donor/this biological parent once you turn 18.

However, it is worth noting that although the law changed in 2005 there were a lot of births that were still recorded as ‘anonymous’ after this time. For example, 72% in 2005, 56% in 2006, and 21% in 2007.

If you don’t know if your parent(s) used an Open ID donor you’ll discover this when your application to the OTR is processed. The waiting time for these applications is at least 9 months.

As of end of 2024, 767 “Open ID” DCP could have applied (with another 1182 across 2025) but by the end March only 13 DCP had been sent their information with around 50 more on waiting list for processing.

These numbers could be low for a number of reasons but the overriding theory is that the majority of these DCP do not know they are DCP and you can’t apply for information you don’t know exists!
