- Vitrification refers to the quick and rapid cooling of oocytes, embryos and sperm by dipping them in liquid nitrogen (-210°C)
- Vitrification is preferred over slow freezing as vitrification prevents ice crystal formation within the gamete/embryo leading to better survival probability.
- The gametes/embryos undergo a dehydration process which removes all the water within them to which in turn facilitates effective vitrification.
- Vitrification is mainly used to preserve gametes/embryos over extended periods of time to be used at a later date.
