The term “Dibling” is sometimes used to describe people who share the same biological donor parent but did not grow up together.
This includes:
- Donor Conceived People (DCP) and the biological children their parents’ donor are raising (Non Donor Conceived Offspring).
- Donor Conceived People (DCP) in separate families whose parents each used the same donor.
- Donor Conceived People (DCP) with siblings from the same donor and living in the same household being raised by the same parent(s).
Why “Dibling” is an offensive term to DCP
- It minimizes the connection that Donor Conceived People (DCP) have with their biological siblings.
- It reduces Donor Conceived People’s (DCP) biological connections to a ‘less-than’ relationship.
- It is disempowering
- It is a word used often by Recipient Parents to make them feel more comfortable
Acceptable alternatives to the word “Dibling”
- DC siblings
- Donor conceived siblings
- Half siblings
- Siblings
- Non Donor Conceived siblings
It is acceptable to specify that these siblings are being raised by the donor, raised by other parents who used the same donor, or are being raised in the same household.
