DCP: What you could say to someone who asks you whether they should have a Donor Conceived child

Why do intending parents think it’s appropriate to ask a DCP whether they should have a DC child? Do they not understand how VERY triggering this can be for a DCP?

Many late discovery DCP would not wish being donor conceived on anyone:

  • the risk of inheriting an unknown genetic disease and thus not knowing what you, the parent, are dealing with
  • discovering and navigating that your DCP is part of a large sibling pod
  • your DCP having hundreds of half siblings across the world
  • a higher chance of your DCP being neurodivergent
  • for your grandchildren to inherit a genetic disease that you know nothing about
  • the much higher risk of consanguinity for your DCP

are just some of the potential issues that DCP are faced with.

It’s not just about the lies and secrecy that DCP can be subject too. It’s the lifespan impact of being donor conceived and the intergenerational impact on their intergenerationally DC children and grandchildren.
